During a fight in the Taiwanese Legislative Yuan, a lawmaker grabbed the documents containing a controversial reform bill and fled the chamber; this unusual action halted the voting and garnered significant attention both domestically and in the global press.
A dramatic moment occurred during the session where the controversial bill, planned to be passed by a majority vote in the Taiwan Legislative Yuan, was to be voted on. During the heated discussions under the roof of the parliament, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Kuo Kuo-Wen snatched the text of the bill from the table and ran outside the parliament, effectively halting the voting on the proposal. As the moments of the incident went viral on social media, the scene of the "legislator who missed the bill" became a hot topic.
IT HAD SPARKED CONTROVERSY
The controversial reform package was presented to the parliament by the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP); it aimed to expand the parliament's oversight powers over the government and change some parliamentary procedures. Tensions remained high both inside and outside the parliament until the day of the session where the bill was to be discussed.
SOME LEGISLATORS FOUGHT
Before the voting, the verbal dispute between the parties quickly turned into a physical altercation. Legislators jumped over tables and pushed each other, while some engaged in fistfights. Amidst these clashes, Kuo grabbed the papers holding the text of the proposal and ran towards the exit of the hall. Other legislators chased after him, but the events led to the suspension of the voting.
As a result of the chaos that unfolded during the day, it was reported that at least five legislators were injured and taken to the hospital. The incident was recorded as one of the most interesting protests that increased tensions in Taiwanese politics just days before the inauguration ceremony of the new president Lai Ching-te.
