After the passing of Sırrı Süreyya Önder, former AK Party MP Mehmet Metiner was booed by a large crowd when he went to the hospital. Following the incident, Metiner made a statement, saying, "I wish those people whose hearts are filled with hatred and resentment knew the meaning of peace. I'm sure those who chanted 'Fascists out' in anger are not aware of what they are doing."

Due to heart disease, the Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and Istanbul MP of the DEM Party, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who had been in intensive care for 18 days, passed away at the age of 62. After Önder's death, many figures from the art and political world went to the hospital.
MEHMET METİNER BOOED IN FRONT OF THE HOSPITAL
One of those figures was former AK Party MP Mehmet Metiner. Metiner faced an unexpected reaction. He was booed by a group in front of the hospital.
METİNER'S STATEMENT: I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL MULTIPLE TIMES DURING ÖNDER'S ILLNESS
After the incident, Metiner made a statement. In a post on his social media account, Mehmet Metiner said: "I went to the hospital multiple times during Sırrı Süreyya Önder's illness. I met with his family and DEM executives countless times there. Last week, I wrote a detailed article about Sırrı Süreyya in my column in Yeni Şafak. Those who know how hard I worked for the peace process know."
"I STAND BEHIND EVERY WORD I EXPRESSED IN TEARS"
As soon as I heard of his passing, I rushed to the hospital. Before that, I connected to several television channels to express my feelings and thoughts about his death. I stand behind every word I expressed in tears and emotion. Even if our politics and our world are different, Sırrı is a fellow citizen I value. We have known each other for many years. I appreciated the contribution he made to the peace process more than anyone else and I have said this everywhere. He was truly a value of our Turkey, coming from Adıyaman.
"I WISH THOSE WITH HEARTS FILLED WITH HATRED KNEW THE MEANING OF PEACE"
Today, our country lost a valuable child. I went to the hospital with an indescribable sorrow weighing on my heart. I was booed at the entrance. I was subjected to very ugly curses and insults. I wish those people with hearts filled with hatred knew the meaning of peace. Those who shouted "Fascists out" in anger surely do not realize what they are doing. They have not been able to understand what Sırrı Süreyya was trying to do. Most importantly, if they had known the tradition of the Kurdish people, they would never have exhibited such behavior.
"I DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS RIGHT"
In the tradition of the Kurdish people, even an enemy who comes to share your grief is welcomed with respect. It’s not a problem. We will not be the owners of any words that would harm either the peace process or our brotherhood based on the behavior directed at us. I don’t even feel like condemning them. I am neither angry with them nor will I be the owner of any harsh words that would upset them. Everyone does what they think is right. I did what I thought was right.
"TODAY IS NOT A DAY FOR PROVOCATIONS"
For peace, let us sacrifice not just one but a life. We are among those who set out to eliminate hatred and enmity. We even know how to embrace those who hate us with love. Today is a day to share our sorrows. Today is a day to lean on each other so that new sorrows do not arise. Today is a day to bury our anger in the ground before our weapons. Today is a day to forgive each other for the sake of that great peace. Today is a day of reconciliation. There may be provocateurs among the crowds. Today is not a day for provocations.
"I HAVE NO ENMITY"
It is not right to condemn the DEM Party and the DEM community as a whole based on the reaction of provocateurs. I believe that both Sırrı Süreyya's family and the executives of the DEM Party have been disturbed by this situation. I leave the curses and insults directed at me, as well as that hostile reaction, to the judgment of our esteemed nation and the common sense of the Kurdish people of Turkey. I have no enmity. I cannot have.
Especially in this critical process, I will never be the owner of a language that would nurture or amplify enmity. For the sake of peace, I will overlook and move on. If I have any rights, I forgive and move on. Everything is for peace and for the sake of the peace process. If we succumb to our egos and become prisoners of our anger, we will both lose and cause others to lose, let it be known!"
