The fog and haze weather conditions that will be effective in Istanbul during the morning and evening hours will lead to a decrease in air quality. Meteorology expert Güven Özdemir warned citizens, stating, "The areas of Göztepe, Uzunçayır, and Fikirtepe facing the E-5, as well as Kartal and Mecidiyeköy, are experiencing severe air pollution. Those with chronic illnesses and children should avoid going outside as much as possible."
It has been reported that the foggy and hazy weather observed in Istanbul will be effective for a week.
FOG IS EFFECTIVE IN ISTANBUL
Due to the influence of high-pressure systems coming from Africa, fog and haze are effective in Istanbul during the morning and evening hours. This situation leads to a decrease in air quality in the city. The areas with the worst air pollution include Göztepe, Kartal, Fikirtepe, Uzunçayır, Mecidiyeköy, and Kağıthane.
Dr. Güven Özdemir, a faculty member and meteorology expert from Istanbul Aydın University, told AA correspondent that Turkey is under the influence of high-pressure systems coming from Africa. Özdemir stated that the reason for the fog and haze being effective in Istanbul during these days is the rapid cooling of the land. He explained, "During the day, the temperature absorbs and retains solar radiation, but at night, with the sunset, the land begins to cool rapidly. Because the sky is clear, we experience a rapid loss of radiation."
Özdemir noted that this situation causes evaporation in areas near the sea, lakes, and forested areas, stating, "For this reason, we see fog and haze more in low-lying areas, riverbanks, lake shores, or coastal areas. Since it is winter, we need to be very careful. During times of high pressure, frost and fog events can be observed frequently."
BE CAREFUL NEXT WEEK
Özdemir stated that no rainfall is expected in Istanbul for a week and that the effect of high pressure will continue, adding: "Foggy and hazy weather will be effective in Istanbul for a week. Citizens living in metropolitan areas need to pay attention to air pollution along with fog and haze during the morning and evening hours. Air pollution will reach its peak in the early morning hours and after sunset. Those with chronic illnesses and children should avoid going outside as much as possible. One should not go out without a mask. Otherwise, diseases will progress."
"AIR POLLUTION IS AT ITS PEAK IN 6 DISTRICTS"
Güven Özdemir noted that Istanbul, built on seven hills, is not on flat ground. He emphasized that air pollution will be effective in areas with high industry and traffic, stating, "In Istanbul, air pollution is at its peak in the parts of Göztepe, Uzunçayır, and Fikirtepe facing the E-5, as well as in Kartal and Mecidiyeköy."
