Traffic was disrupted in Silivri after screws spilled onto the road from a truck carrying construction materials. The screws, spread over an area of approximately 4 kilometers, caused multiple vehicle tires to burst, leading to long queues on the D-100 highway.
The incident occurred around 09:00 on the D-100 highway at the Edirne direction, Yeni Mahalle location. For an undetermined reason, screws were spilled onto the road for about 4 kilometers from a truck carrying construction materials. The sharp objects scattered on the road damaged the tires of several vehicles in motion. Upon reports from drivers, Silivri Regional Traffic, Highways, and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) teams were dispatched to the area. To clean up the screws, all lanes of the highway were closed to traffic for approximately 2 hours. During this time, transportation was provided via the side road. Long vehicle queues formed on the road during the cleanup operations.
POLICE AND SHOPKEEPERS MOBILIZED
The screws on the road were collected collectively by traffic police, highway teams, and local shopkeepers. After the efforts, traffic flow was gradually restored in a single lane under control. Meanwhile, a brief argument occurred between a tanker driver waiting in traffic and the traffic police officer on duty.
"WE ARE TRYING TO COLLECT"
Hamza Yer, a local shopkeeper helping the teams, said, "Screws were spilled from a vehicle; we are trying to collect them as much as we can. We are working to prevent them from damaging drivers' tires. We noticed the incident when the road was closed. The screws were probably spilled from a van."
Silivri District Police Department teams have launched an investigation to identify the truck from which the screws were spilled and its driver.
