As a forest fire that broke out on the Greek island of Salamina quickly threatened residential areas, the toll has worsened. The lifeless bodies of 2 people were found among the flames, and 9 people were also injured. As the fire progressed, residents in 4 areas were evacuated.
A forest fire on Salamina Island, located opposite Athens, the capital of Greece, has claimed lives. It was reported that 2 people lost their lives and 9 people were injured in the fire that started in the wooded area of the Peristeria region. As the flames reached residential areas, evacuation decisions were made in some regions.
FLAMES SPREAD TO RESIDENTIAL AREAS
According to Greek State Television ERT, the fire that started at noon today on Salamina Island quickly spread over a wide area. The fire, which started at two separate points in the Peristeria and Selinia regions, threatened nearby residential areas under the influence of the wind.
As the fire spread to houses, teams intensified their interventions in the area, and some homes were damaged.
BODIES OF 2 PEOPLE FOUND
During the operations in the fire zone, the bodies of 2 people were found. Vasilis Vathrakoyannis, spokesperson for the Greek Fire Brigade, announced that 9 people were also injured in the fire.
While no detailed information was shared about the condition of the injured, it was stated that teams continued their efforts both to bring the fire under control and to ensure safety in the region.
4 REGIONS EVACUATED
Residents experienced difficult moments due to the dense smoke, and it was reported that the Peristeria, Kolones, Dei Halioti, and Perani regions were evacuated for security reasons.
Firefighting teams are responding to the fire both from land and air. As extinguishing efforts continue on the island, no official statement has yet been made regarding the cause of the fire.
