It has been claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave instructions to support Argentina's sovereignty claims over the Falkland Islands following tensions with the UK. Israeli government sources speaking to the British press linked this move to the UK's decisions to recognize the State of Palestine and ban trade with Israeli settlements established in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israel's Embassy in London denied the claims.

It has been claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed Israeli diplomats abroad to support Argentina's claims to the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands.

REFERENCE WAS MADE TO BRITAIN'S DECISION TO RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF PALESTINE

According to the report by the British newspaper The Telegraph, based on Israeli government sources, Netanyahu told the diplomats that they had changed their stance on the Falkland Islands and instructed them to accept Argentina's historical claims.

Sources, pointing to Britain's decisions to recognize the State of Palestine and to ban trade with Israeli settlements established in the occupied Palestinian territories, argued that the tension in Israel-UK relations would spill over into the Falkland Islands issue.

Government sources noted that if Netanyahu returns to power in the elections to be held on October 27, this change in position would also be reflected in a rapprochement in Israel-Argentina relations.

The spokesperson for Israel's Embassy in London, however, said in a statement to the newspaper that they had not received such an order and rejected the claims.

The UK Foreign Office, meanwhile, did not comment on the matter.

NATIONALIST PARTY LEADER REACTED

Rupert Lowe, leader of Restore Britain, one of the nationalist parties in the UK who had previously argued that Britain should give unconditional support to Israel, reacted to the news.

Lowe, posting from his US-based social media account, used the following statements: "Why should Britain be expected to respect theirs when Israeli leaders do not respect our national interests? Britain is under no obligation to provide unconditional military and political support to any foreign government. British interests should guide our foreign policy. The Falkland Islands belong to Britain and will remain Britain's."

THE DEEP-SEA DRILLING PROJECT HAD AGAIN SPARKED TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES

After Argentina took the UK's deep-sea drilling project off the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands to court, tension between the two countries over the sovereignty of the islands had flared up again.

At the World Cup held in the summer, Argentine footballers had also unfurled a banner reading "The Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina."

A referendum was held in 2013 on the islands, recognized as a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic where about 4,000 people live, and in the vote 1,513 of 1,517 electors voted to remain part of Britain.
