With the new draft law prepared by the government, it is planned to mandate vitamins in white bread, introduce a color-coded warning system for foods, ban unhealthy products in school canteens, and impose fines of hundreds of thousands of liras on those who do not comply with the rules.

The government has taken action for a new regulation to protect public health and combat childhood obesity. The bill, expected to be submitted to Parliament, foresees significant changes in many areas from food to water security.

VITAMIN REQUIREMENT COMES FOR WHITE BREAD

According to the draft, vitamin and mineral supplementation will become mandatory for bread flours. Flours with a whole wheat ratio below 40% will be enriched with vitamins determined by the Ministry of Health. This step aims to improve the nutritional quality of the society and reduce vitamin deficiencies.

COLORED WARNING PERIOD ON PACKAGING

A new system will be implemented on packaged foods to enable consumers to make more informed choices. Colored warning labels indicating the starch-based sugar and fat content of products will be mandatory. Thus, healthy and unhealthy products can be easily distinguished.

NEW RULES IN SCHOOL CANTEENS

Criteria for products sold in preschools, primary schools, and secondary schools will be tightened. Only products approved by the Ministry of Health will be allowed in canteens. Packaged products without the 'School Food' logo will not be permitted for sale.

HEAVY PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE

According to the news in Sabah; high fines will be imposed on manufacturers who do not comply with the rules within the scope of the regulation. A fine of 500,000 TL is envisaged for manufacturers who do not enrich flour, and 200,000 TL for those who do not include warnings on packaging. Additionally, it is planned to confiscate foods produced contrary to the rules and transfer their ownership to the public.

WATER SECURITY ALSO UNDER MONITORING

The new regulation will not be limited to food. Inspections will also be increased for drinking water. In case of repeated violations within the same year, fines will be applied incrementally, and deterrence will be increased.
