NEW FOOTAGE OF THE TRAGEDY HAS EMERGED
The newly released footage has once again revealed the magnitude of the disaster. In the images accessed by Halk TV, it was clearly seen that a massive pile of earth rapidly collapsed and engulfed the vehicle that recorded the footage. Additionally, in the distant shots, moments were captured when construction machinery trying to escape the landslide was buried under the earth.
TRIAL POSTPONED
The first hearing of the trial concerning the tragedy in which 9 workers lost their lives under the collapse, with 5 of the defendants in custody, was held on March 21, 2025. The court panel decided to continue the detention of the arrested defendants and to hear some witnesses, postponing the hearing to June 30, taking into account the time required for the expert report to be submitted.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On February 13, 2024, at the Çöpler Gold Mine located in the İliç district of Erzincan, the pile of earth stored after the cyanide leaching process turned into a landslide at 14:28. It was reported that a mass estimated to be approximately 10 million cubic meters moved at a speed of 10 meters/second from a 200-meter slope, sliding 800 meters towards the Sabırlı Stream. It was estimated that the leach pile covered an area of 300 acres, and 9 workers lost their lives in the disaster.
