The Fantasy Bra worn by Kylie Jenner at the Victoria’s Secret show in Los Angeles on October 18 has been valued at $50 million. The Jacob & Co.-signed design features a total of 4,410 natural diamonds along with a 75.54-carat yellow diamond. The design, which 15 master craftsmen worked for more than 1,000 hours to create from approximately 3,218 pieces, surpassed the 2000 record of $15 million. However, this figure is not a sale price but an announced value.
Victoria’s Secret’s Fantasy Bra, which returned to the runway after an 8-year absence, drew attention as much for its construction process as for its value. The price of the piece—a jewel designed in the shape of a bra rather than an ordinary undergarment—is determined by the rarity of the stones used and months of handcraftsmanship.
RETURNED TO THE RUNWAY AFTER 8 YEARS
Victoria’s Secret announced on October 15 that the Fantasy Bra tradition was returning and stated that this year’s design was created together with luxury jewelry brand Jacob & Co. In the tradition that began with Claudia Schiffer in 1996, the show’s most spectacular piece is commissioned with precious stones each year. The last Fantasy Bra was worn by Elsa Hosk in 2018.
Kylie Jenner, 29, walked the runway for the first time at the October 18 show, wearing the piece with a silver mini skirt and large white feathered wings. Jenner was watched from the front row by her boyfriend Timothée Chalamet and her mother Kris Jenner.
THE CENTER STONE ALONE IS WORTH $22 MILLION
A significant part of the design’s value comes from the center stone. At the center of the bra is a 75.54-carat yellow diamond, radiant-cut and classified as “fancy vivid.” The stone alone was reported to be worth $22 million. In the center section, the yellow diamond is accompanied by 2 white diamonds totaling 11.85 carats.
The yellow diamond’s weight, depth, and position on the body shaped the entire design. From its setting to its supporting structure and the distribution of the surrounding stones, every detail was planned around this stone.
A TOTAL OF 1,373 CARATS OF DIAMONDS
In addition to the center stone, the design features another 4,409 diamonds in various cuts. The stones have a total weight of 1,373.39 carats, and all were set in 18-karat white and yellow gold.
Among these are 91 large white diamonds with a total weight of 405.06 carats. Ranging from 5.01 to 18.59 carats each, these stones fall into the E-F color range and the VVS2-VS1 clarity grade. The stones were cut in 6 different shapes: pear, round, heart, oval, marquise, and the brand-exclusive “Angel-cut,” developed for Jacob & Co.’s 40th anniversary.
3,218 PIECES, 1,000 HOURS OF WORK
Another factor determining the price is craftsmanship. Designed to move like fabric, the bra was made from approximately 3,218 individually designed pieces. A team of 15 artisans worked more than 1,000 hours to complete the piece.
Traditional jewelry-making techniques and computer-aided design were used together in the construction process. After the initial drawing, the team prepared a full-scale model from flexible cardboard and cut each section by hand, measuring it on a mannequin. The computer-modeled pieces were cast in 18-karat white gold using the lost-wax method, then hand-cleaned and polished.
WEIGHING APPROXIMATELY 1.8 KILOGRAMS
The jewel weighs approximately 1.8 kilograms. The main challenge in the design was to combine the strength needed to support such a heavy piece with the flexibility required of a wearable item.
In areas with more movement, the stones were set in bezel settings, while large stones used prong settings that allow light to enter from every angle and conceal the metal as much as possible. The supporting bars beneath the settings were designed to be thinner, and the white gold settings were curved inward to follow the form of a fabric bra. According to what Jacob Arabo told Vogue, Jenner’s exact body measurements were taken for the piece.
“VALUE ALONE WAS NOT ENOUGH”
Jacob & Co. announced that the design is the most valuable Fantasy Bra ever made. The brand’s founder, Jacob Arabo, said that the variety and placement of the stones, the way they reflect light, and their movement on the body were decisive in the design. In his statement, Arabo used the phrase “Value alone was never enough.”
Victoria’s Secret’s chief creative director, Adam Selman, noted that Arabo is a figure who has shaped pop culture and that he designed the piece for the person who would wear it.
$35 MILLION ABOVE THE PREVIOUS RECORD
The new design also surpassed the record in Fantasy Bra history. The previous record belonged to the $15 million “Red Hot Fantasy Bra,” worn by Gisele Bündchen in 2000. The last design, worn by Elsa Hosk in 2018, was valued at $1 million.
$50 MILLION IS NOT THE SALE PRICE
The $50 million announced for the bra does not mean that a buyer paid that amount; the figure reflects the value assigned to the design. The piece was not offered for sale at that price either.
After the show, it was claimed that a Turkish businessman had bought the design to give to his wife. However, this claim, whose source is unclear, was confirmed by neither Victoria’s Secret nor Jacob & Co.
THE “WHY KYLIE JENNER?” DEBATE
Jenner, who is not a Victoria’s Secret Angel or a professional model, carrying the Fantasy Bra prompted criticism on social media. In his statement to Vogue, Selman said the brand chose Jenner because of her cultural impact that goes beyond fashion.
