Pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign from the ruling Labour Party. British media reported that after a heavy defeat in local elections, over 70 members of parliament have called for Starmer to step down.
MINISTERS ALSO NAMED
According to government sources, it is claimed that the foreign and interior ministers are among those calling for Starmer's resignation. However, the government side argues that those demanding resignation within the cabinet are in the minority.
CONSECUTIVE RESIGNATIONS FROM MPS
While the number of Labour MPs calling for Starmer to step down has reportedly risen to 77, some MPs have also resigned from their roles as ministerial advisors. It is reported that deputy prime minister and cabinet office advisors have also taken a stance against Starmer, following advisor MPs serving in the interior, health, and environment ministries.
ELECTION DEFEAT DEEPENS CRISIS
The Labour Party's underperformance in the local elections on May 7 and regional parliament elections in Scotland and Wales has reignited leadership debates within the party. It is assessed that the pressure on Starmer could further increase in the coming days.
