President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received Yargıtay President Ömer Kerkez, who took office in place of Mehmet Akarca a few months ago. The meeting between the two took place at the Presidential Complex. Erdogan and Kerkez posed for the cameras during the meeting. No details about the content of their meeting were shared.

HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT IN THE 37TH ROUND

Yargıtay President Mehmet Akarca was elected to his position on March 24, 2020, and the Yargıtay members went to the polls on Monday, March 25, as his 4-year term was ending on March 24. In the first 36 rounds of the election, no candidate received at least 175 votes, which is the absolute majority of the 348 Yargıtay members. Therefore, a 37th round of voting was held with the participation of Akarca and Kerkez. Kerkez was elected as the Yargıtay President for a 4-year term by obtaining the absolute majority of the total number of members.

HE HAD SENT A MESSAGE OF "MY DOOR IS OPEN TO EVERYONE"

In his oath-taking and robe-wearing ceremony, Kerkez made a statement promising to do his best to protect the reputation of the Yargıtay. He stated that his office would be open to everyone and that he would not discriminate against anyone. Kerkez said, "The Turkish judiciary will rise on the shoulders of true judges and prosecutors who have engraved the idea of respect for human rights, fundamental rights and freedoms in their minds, the power of independence in their decisions, and the sense of impartiality and justice in their hearts."
