Russian President Vladimir Putin visited China amid ongoing wars in Iran and Ukraine and shifting global balances. He arrived in Beijing last night for a two-day visit, welcomed at the airport by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. A formal ceremony will be held today at Tiananmen Square for the Russian leader. Putin will hold one-on-one and delegation-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
ARRIVAL AFTER TRUMP'S VISIT
Putin's visit comes right after U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to China from May 13-15. While Trump's itinerary included visits to historical sites and private meetings, Putin's program appears to focus more on official engagements and strategic discussions.
25TH VISIT TO CHINA
This visit marks Putin's 25th trip to China during his tenure. The Russian leader last attended ceremonies in Beijing in September 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In a message released before the visit, Putin stated that Russia-China relations have reached an "unprecedented level," emphasizing that the two countries are not forming an alliance against anyone but are working for peace and prosperity.
40 COOPERATION AGREEMENTS ON THE AGENDA
While economic and strategic cooperation topics are expected to take center stage during the visit, it has been indicated that approximately 40 cooperation documents will be signed. Russia, facing Western sanctions after the Ukraine war, and China, experiencing tensions with the U.S. and its allies, have further strengthened their ties in recent years.
RUSSIA'S GROWING INFLUENCE IN ENERGY
Trade volume between the two countries has exceeded $240 billion in the last two years, with China purchasing about half of Russia's exported oil and natural gas. The impact of the war in Iran on energy flow through the Strait of Hormuz has also made Russia a more critical energy partner for China.

China and Russia define their relationship as a "comprehensive strategic coordination partnership for a new era." The two countries continue close cooperation on platforms such as the United Nations Security Council, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS.
