Following the arrest of Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat, the Beşiktaş Municipal Council convened today and elected Ömer Rasim Şişman, the youngest council member and Secretary General of the City Council, as the Deputy Mayor of Beşiktaş.

Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat was arrested on January 17 as part of a bribery operation and sent to prison.

After his arrest, Akpolat was dismissed by the Ministry of Interior. The Istanbul Governorship also announced that the deputy mayor who would replace Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat would be elected in the municipal council.

The Beşiktaş Municipal Council elected Ömer Rasim Şişman, the youngest council member and Secretary General of the City Council, as the Deputy Mayor of Beşiktaş. Şişman was appointed with 26 votes and a majority in the council.

WHO IS ÖMER RASİM ŞİŞMAN?

Born in 1991 in Kahramanmaraş, Şişman completed his primary and secondary education in Kahramanmaraş. He graduated with honors from Haliç University with a degree in Political Science and International Relations. Şişman also completed his master's degree in Business Administration at the Social Sciences Institute of the same university and is currently serving as the president of the Social Democracy Foundation (SODEV).

Şişman has held various positions in the CHP for many years. In the local elections on March 31, 2024, Şişman was elected as a council member for Beşiktaş and İBB, and he is also continuing his role as the CHP group secretary in the İBB council.
