Speaking at the NATO Summit, Romanian Defense Minister Radu-Dinel Miruta emphasized that Türkiye and Romania share common interests extending beyond the Black Sea. Expressing satisfaction with existing contracts such as the Otokar and Cobra armored vehicle projects, Miruta stated that their goal for the new period is to establish joint production in Romania within the ammunition and defense industries. Miruta said, "We cannot rely on other states for delivery during critical moments; expanding our cooperation with Türkiye is extremely important."

For the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Ankara, Romanian Defense Minister Radu-Dinel Miruta evaluated the NATO Summit and Romania-Turkey relations.

“WE DON’T HAVE TO SEARCH FOR 32 DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS TO THE SAME PROBLEM”

Miruta stated that there are challenges worldwide and it is very important for all countries to determine the best joint solution for the same problem, adding, “We don’t have to search for 32 different solutions to the same problem. Therefore, we are discussing how we can better conduct defense, how we can increase our financial resources, how we can boost production. In fact, it’s not just about resources but also speed.”

Miruta pointed out that he is one of the ministers who has brought a project regarding the mapping of each country’s available resources to the table, and said that Romania has ammunition production capacity but does not have the latest technologies in some areas.

“WE HAVE COBRA ARMORED VEHICLES, WE SIGNED A CONTRACT FOR THE CORVETTE WE WILL PURCHASE FROM OTOKAR”

Miruta stated that matches can be made according to the parameters of different countries and spoke about Turkey-Romania relations as follows: “There are already ongoing projects between Turkey and Romania, and we are very pleased with this. Romania currently has some ongoing contracts with Turkey. We have Cobra armored vehicles, and we signed a contract for the corvette we will purchase from Otokar. I believe the fact is that there is more than a sea between Turkey and Romania—that is, not just the Black Sea, but both countries have shared interests that go beyond the Black Sea.”

Miruta, expressing that they expect the efforts to expand the protection of critical infrastructure in the Black Sea to reach a successful point, emphasized that cooperation between Turkey and Romania is extremely important.

“OUR TARGET IS PRODUCTION IN ROMANIA”

Miruta concluded his remarks as follows: “Romania has excellent relations with Turkey. It is very clear that we need to cooperate by considering the interests of both countries. Protecting the Black Sea is our common interest. Joint production of different munitions is our common interest. Ensuring the security of this part of the Eastern Flank is our common interest. Based on these common interests, it is extremely important to expand cooperation, which is currently excellent but has gaps.”

Miruta, emphasizing that the new era in defense cooperation will focus on domestic production, said, “Our target is production in Romania. Since Turkey is also interested in producing in Romania, it is important for us that the money invested for the Romanian Army also reaches the national industry.”

Miruta, stating that developing production capability in the defense industry within the country is a necessity for security, said, “It is extremely important for the Romanian army to be able to procure the capabilities it needs from factories operating in Romania. In the event of a conflict, we cannot rely on deliveries dependent on other states.”
