In the UK, an emergency recall was ordered after salmonella bacteria was detected in eggs imported from Ukraine. The type of bacteria found in eggs belonging to the company Yasensvit Ltd was determined to be linked to at least 36 infection cases seen this year. Authorities warned that eggs bearing the code 3UA1012066 must absolutely not be consumed, and also called on businesses to remove the products from sale.
Food safety authorities in the UK announced that Salmonella Enteritidis bacteria were found in eggs imported from the Ukraine-based company Yasensvit Ltd. The bacterial strain detected in laboratory tests was reported to be linked to infections seen in at least 36 people during the year.
In order to protect public health, urgent action was initiated to withdraw the eggs in question from sale and recall them from consumers.
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS CODE ON THE EGGS
The authorities announced that the eggs at risk have the code 3UA1012066 on their shells. It was stated that the eggs produced by the company Yasensvit Ltd in Ukraine were distributed mainly through wholesalers and catering businesses, and were also offered for sale in some small retail stores. Consumers were asked not to eat eggs bearing this code, and businesses were asked to immediately withdraw the products from sale.
"THESE EGGS MUST NOT BE CONSUMED"
Jacquelyn McCormick, Head of Incident Management at the UK Food Standards Agency, confirmed in a statement on the matter that salmonella had been detected in eggs imported from Ukraine.
McCormick stated that they had taken urgent measures to protect public health and said: "We have detected Salmonella Enteritidis in eggs imported from a facility in Ukraine. In order to protect public health, we acted quickly and instructed that the affected products on the UK market be withdrawn from sale and recalled."
"CONSUMERS SHOULD NOT EAT THESE EGGS"
Emphasizing that the warning covers eggs from a single facility in Ukraine, McCormick said the products were distributed largely through wholesalers and the food supply chain. McCormick said, "Consumers should not eat these eggs. Businesses should withdraw the products from sale and carry out recalls at retail sales locations. Because consuming these eggs may not be safe."
WHAT DISEASES DOES SALMONELLA CAUSE?
The Salmonella bacteria can be transmitted to humans through the consumption of contaminated food. The infection usually manifests with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. The illness can be more severe, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
In the authorities' statement, it was noted that a link was found between 36 infection cases and the bacterial strain, while no definitive information was shared indicating that all patients had consumed the eggs in question. The recall decision covers specific products on the UK market. However, the report does not include any information regarding whether the eggs were offered for sale in Turkey.
