A mother of two living in the Cizre district of Şırnak learned to repair vehicles over time at an auto repair shop she originally came to years ago to help her husband. Initially preparing meals and handling the workshop's organization, the woman now dismantles engines and performs vehicle maintenance, crafting a remarkable success story.
About 20 years ago, Arzu Akol moved with her spouse from Adana to the Cizre district of Şırnak, and she initially was at the auto repair workshop they established as a family business to support her husband.
SHE CAME TO SUPPORT, LEARNED THE TRADE
Akol, who brought home-cooked meals to her husband, gradually developed an interest in vehicles. She began learning the trade by watching her husband's work. Over the years, Akol gained experience in many areas, from maintenance and fault detection to engine work, creating an unusual success story in the region.
A MOTHER AT HOME, A MASTER AT WORK
Arzu Akol, who noted that locals were surprised to see her at the auto repair workshop at first, said some people thought women could not do this job. However, Akol stated that customers got used to her over time, and today many people come to their workplace with their families. Describing herself as a mother of two, Akol emphasized that she balances motherhood and work life. She said she picks her children up from school at noon, and then returns to the workshop with them.
SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH HER SPOUSE
Sefa Akol, who stated that they have worked shoulder to shoulder with his wife for years, said, "When there's no one else, we have to back each other up. It's also a matter of trust. Sometimes we're at the computer, sometimes at the vehicle, sometimes disassembling an engine. It seems a bit unusual to everyone, wondering if a woman can do repairs. But we work in the shop. We've often heard the question, 'Don't you get bored with your spouse all day?' Especially in this region, but right now we are very satisfied."
The couple, continuing their operations in Cizre, keep managing both family and work life under one roof.
