Fatma Köklü, who was seriously injured in a gun attack in a park by her ex-husband in Gaziantep, lost her 9-day battle for life. It has emerged that the suspect called his ex-wife to the park to kill her and told their children as he was leaving the house, "I will kill your mother today."
On January 20, 2025, in the afternoon hours, an incident occurred in Celal Doğan Park, Gazikent Neighborhood, Şehitkamil district of Gaziantep, where a man named Mehmet Yeter met his ex-wife Fatma Köklü (39) in the park to see her. After a while of talking, Mehmet Yeter started to argue with Köklü and shot himself in the head with the gun he had.
LOST THE FIGHT FOR LIFE Upon the notification of the surrounding people, police and 112 Emergency Health teams were dispatched to the scene. The seriously injured woman was taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Fatma Köklü, who had been receiving treatment in intensive care for 9 days at the private hospital, could not be saved despite all the doctors' interventions in the morning hours. The body of Fatma Köklü, who was killed by her ex-husband, was handed over to her relatives for burial after the procedures at the Gaziantep Forensic Medicine Institution.
TOLD HER CHILDREN "I WILL KILL YOUR MOTHER" It was revealed that the suspect, Mehmet Yeter, who fled after the incident and was caught in an operation carried out by the homicide bureau teams in the village where he was hiding, had planned the act. The murdered woman's brother, Fatih Köklü, claimed that the suspect told his 10 and 11-year-old children on the day of the incident, "Today, I will kill your mother."
"HE HAD PLANNED THIS MURDER IN HIS MIND" Fatih Köklü, who claimed that the suspect had carried out the act in a planned manner, said, "They had compatibility issues. He had made such death threats before. They had fought before. We went to the police station and took my sister. We requested a restraining order. Later, they got divorced. After the divorce, he was calling my sister with various excuses. He was calling her to his side with excuses like 'The children miss you, they want to see you.' My sister did not demand alimony. She had just returned from Umrah. She had wanted to meet many times before. My sister went to him to say one last time, 'Don't call me, don't disturb me.' He had planned this murder in his mind and even told his son, 'I will kill your mother today.' This was something he had planned. When my sister said, 'Leave me alone,' he shot her right in the middle of her face with a gun. She had been in intensive care for about 10 days. She passed away this morning. We have been in a devastated state since that day. My mother is sick, suffering from the pain of losing a child. We are in a state that cannot be expressed in words. He had tried to kill her before. My sister was cooking when he came from behind and pulled a knife to her throat," he said.
"WE WANT HIM TO RECEIVE A DETERRENT PUNISHMENT" Köklü also emphasized that they want the suspect to receive the heaviest punishment, saying, "Unfortunately, there are no deterrent punishments for women's deaths in our country. We want the death penalty for femicides. Don't think it won't happen to us. Today, we lost our sister. We want a deterrent punishment. Our hearts are broken, and we don't want others' hearts to break. The suspect will say, 'She betrayed me.' He will make accusations. He will ask for a good behavior discount. However, we have full faith in our state. We believe that the suspect will receive the heaviest punishment," he said.
SUSPECT ARRESTED On the other hand, it was learned that the suspect, Mehmet Yeter, who fled after committing the act and was caught in a nighttime operation at the house he was hiding in, surrounded by the Homicide Bureau teams, was arrested and sent to prison.
