According to a report by Law & Crime, Mexican immigrant Diana Guadalupe Zavala Lopez has confessed to the crime of tampering with evidence. Security camera footage shows the woman entering a Shell gas station in Houston to use the restroom in the early hours of April 2, 2023. According to investigators, a customer later found the dead child and reported the situation. Houston Police Department Homicide Detective Calab Bowling stated, "No one else entered that restroom, and the [newborn] was not there before the woman entered. It appears she gave birth in the restroom." The footage shows Zavala Lopez leaving the gas station in a white Cadillac after staying for about 15 minutes. A woman who used the restroom after her reported finding the baby around 4:25 AM. The police did not disclose the baby's name or cause of death, but indicated that the baby was estimated to have died about an hour before being found. 26-year-old Zavala Lopez was arrested in August 2023 at a bus terminal in Brownsville, Texas. Border patrol agents stated that the woman had overstayed her visitor visa and initially described her as a murder suspect trying to flee to Mexico, but no murder charges were filed. The defendant accepted charges of tampering with evidence related to a human corpse and altering/destroying evidence with the intent to obstruct an investigation. Harris County District Judge Kristin M. Guiney sentenced the woman to 4 years in prison in a state correctional facility, considering her already 489 days of detention.
