Former footballer Ümit Karan appeared before a judge for the first time on charges of "drug or stimulant substance trafficking or supply." At the hearing held at the 41st Heavy Penal Court, arrested defendant Ümit Karan and his lawyers were present, with a prison sentence of no less than 10 years being sought against him.
''SHE SLANDERED HIM FOR REVENGE''
Defending himself at the hearing, Ümit Karan stated that his monthly income was 700 thousand lira and that the accusations against him were baseless, saying, "The only reason I am here is due to the statements of my ex-girlfriend, Şule Naz Öztürk. After we broke up, she constantly tried to reach me through my close circle. I blocked her everywhere, and finally, to take revenge on me, she made such a slander. She also slandered other friends I introduced her to. Her drug test came back positive, and she said she met with me 7 months ago. If that were the case, her test wouldn't have been positive."
''I WILL BE MORE CAREFUL''
Karan, who said he was taken to the hospital five times in prison, stated, "I had bad days psychologically. I will be more careful in my next life."
RELEASE WITH A BAN ON OVERSEAS TRAVEL
After the defenses and witness statements, the court panel decided to release Ümit Karan on the condition of a ban on overseas travel.
