The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that the conditions of the La Niña weather event, which cools the planet, are expected to be relatively weak and short-lived in the next 3 months. LA NINA IS EXPECTED TO BE WEAK AND SHORT-LIVEDThe WMO published a new report on weather event forecasts between December 2024 and February 2025. The report stated that there is a 55% chance of transitioning from the current neutral conditions (neither El Niño nor La Niña) to La Niña conditions during this period. It was also noted that the La Niña effect is expected to be weak and short-lived. It was emphasized that seasonal forecasts regarding El Niño and La Niña weather events, which cause temperature increases, and their effects on global climate models are important tools for early warnings and early actions. 2024 IS ON TRACK TO BE THE HOTTEST YEARWMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, whose views were included in the report, stated, "The year 2024 started with the El Niño weather event and is on track to be the hottest year on record. Even if the La Niña event occurs, the short-term cooling effect will be insufficient to balance the warming effect of greenhouse gases that trap record levels of heat in the atmosphere." Saulo noted that since May, there have been no El Niño or La Niña conditions, and they have witnessed an extraordinary series of weather events, including record rainfall and floods, which have become the new norm in changing climate conditions.
