The severe rainfall brought by Storm Adam, which has been affecting Valencia, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands in eastern Spain for two days, has paralyzed life. In some places, more than 650 kilograms of rain per square meter fell, and many municipalities were flooded. In Catalonia, a woman was swept away by the flood, while in Valencia, a woman died at sea. About 2,000 people in campsites were evacuated, while authorities warned the public not to leave their homes.
Spain’s Mediterranean coast has been battered by Storm Adam, the season’s first named storm. Rivers overflowed due to the downpour, and some citizens whose homes were flooded climbed onto roofs and waited for help.
“LA SAFOR COMPLETELY FLOODED”
Pilar Bernabé, the Spanish Government’s Representative in Valencia, announced that the La Safor region along the coastline was completely flooded. Bernabé said, “More than 650 kilograms of rain fell in some places. Rain is expected to continue, and many municipalities are completely flooded. Helicopters are on standby. Boats belonging to Civil Guard teams are carrying out rescue operations for stranded people.”
Bernabé announced that approximately 2,000 people staying in two campsites had been evacuated and transferred to designated shelter areas, and called on citizens: “Do not leave your homes, stay in high areas. It is not possible to move.”
THEY WAITED FOR HELP ON ROOFS
It was reported that in some small municipalities, citizens whose homes were flooded climbed onto roofs and waited to be rescued. Emergency teams and soldiers from the Spanish army’s emergency response unit evacuated those stranded. The Valencia Emergency Coordination Center, in an alert message sent to people’s mobile phones, asked citizens not to travel, to go to upper floors, and to stay away from basements and garages. In Valencia and Alicante, 781 reports related to the storm were received.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also stated in a post on his social media account that the situation in the Valencia region was “very difficult” and called on citizens to avoid all kinds of travel.
2 WOMEN LOST THEIR LIVES
In Cabrera de Mar, about 27 kilometers north of Barcelona, a 35-year-old woman who was trying to cross a stream with her children on Saturday night was swept away by the flood. While the woman’s husband saved their children, the woman’s lifeless body was later found in a port near Barcelona. Mourning was declared in Cabrera de Mar today.
In the Sagunto district of Valencia, a 55-year-old foreign national woman who went into the sea on Sunday evening drowned. As a result of search efforts by coast guard teams, the woman’s lifeless body was found on a nearby beach.

In Ibiza, which was placed under a red alert, 60 kilograms of rain per square meter fell in one hour. The island’s airport was closed twice, 27 flights were cancelled, and 16 aircraft were redirected to other airports. Due to the rains, many vehicles were stranded on the roads.
Meteorology officials announced that the rainy weather was expected to leave the region starting this evening. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) had announced that September was the hottest September on record on the mainland. Scientists state that climate change is intensifying autumn storms in the Mediterranean.
