The severe wind that took effect in Antalya turned the neighborhood market into a battlefield. At the market known as the “sosyete market,” awnings were torn from their places and fell to the ground while products on the stalls scattered around. Caught unprepared by the storm that suddenly struck, the vendors mobilized to save their goods, while citizens took shelter in enclosed areas to protect themselves from the rain.

The storm that suddenly struck in Antalya negatively affected life in the neighborhood market known among the public as the “Society Market.” As market awnings were torn from their places and fell to the ground due to the strong wind, the products on the stalls were also scattered around. While unprepared vendors tried to save their stalls, citizens took shelter in enclosed areas to protect themselves from the rain and wind.

STRONG WIND TORE AWNINGS FROM THEIR PLACES

In Antalya, where the General Directorate of Meteorology issued a warning for rain, strong wind, and storm, the wind that increased its effect around noon caused difficult moments in the market.

In the open-air market, awnings flew up and fell to the ground, while the products on the stalls were also spread around by the effect of the wind. The vendors tried to gather their stalls to prevent their products from being damaged. In the market, where the rain was also effective, citizens tried to move to safe and enclosed areas.

A vendor who recorded what happened with a mobile phone described the scene that emerged with the words, “The market was completely destroyed, no one was left.”

“THE UMBRELLAS HAD FLOWN AWAY”

Market vendor Ahmet Çelik, stating that the storm had suddenly struck, recounted what they experienced with these words:

“The wind, the storm came, no umbrellas remained. The umbrellas had flown away. People also started to pack up in a hurry. There is nothing to do.”

“ALL THE TENTS FLEW UP”

Market vendor Mehmet Turan also stated that the wind increased its intensity in the afternoon. Turan said, “After two-thirty, three in the afternoon, quite a wind started. When the wind started, all the tents flew up. As you can see, they are scattered, and we are also gathering them up. Right now it is also raining, and we are collecting the items. Other than that, the storm has passed.”
