In Serbia, a historic political rupture occurred in the early general elections held on October 25. The "Student List" movement, led by students, won the election with 52.65 percent of the vote. The "United Serbia" list led by President Aleksandar Vucic suffered a heavy defeat, remaining at 39.22 percent of the vote.
ELECTION RESULTS CELEBRATED WITH ENTHUSIASM
After the election results were announced, the streets of the capital Belgrade filled with thousands of people celebrating the ballot-box victory. Protesters who brought their years of accumulated reactions and excitement for change to the streets demonstrated their anger toward the Vucic government with a striking action.
THEY TRAMPLED THE POSTER OF VUCIC, PUTIN AND XI
During the celebrations, a giant campaign poster featuring Aleksandar Vucic, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping side by side against the backdrop of the Serbian flag was laid on the ground and trampled by the crowd.
STUDENT LIST SECURED THE MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT
According to the preliminary results announced by the Republic Election Commission of Serbia, based on data from 8,135 polling stations, the Student List received 2,246,423 votes. According to CeSID and Ipsos's seat distribution estimate, the Student List secured 141 seats in the 250-seat Serbian Parliament, achieving a majority on its own. Vucic's list remained at 103 seats.
FROM PROTESTS TO BALLOT-BOX VICTORY
The process was sparked by mass anti-corruption demonstrations that began in November 2024 with the collapse of the roof of the railway station in Novi Sad and the death of 15 people. The political movement founded by students who took to the streets against the government's negligence and institutional corruption ended Vucic's rule at the ballot box. The moments when the image of the three leaders was trampled became a symbol of public reaction both to Vucic's authoritarian rule and to the foreign policy line focused on Russia and China.
