The Turkish Bar Association issued a written statement regarding the death of lawyer Hatice Kocaefe as a result of an armed attack. The statement emphasized that the murder is a consequence of the increasing climate of violence in the country and the discrediting of the legal profession.
“LAWYERS ARE SYSTEMATICALLY TARGETED”
The Association stated that the attack Kocaefe suffered on April 28 in Gürsu district of Bursa was not an isolated incident, noting that the legal profession has been systematically targeted for a long time. The statement said that lawyers are being identified with their clients, made a party to disputes, and this fuels violence.
“THIS APPROACH UNDERMINES THE RULE OF LAW”
The Bar Association stated that attacks on defense target not only lawyers but also citizens' right to seek justice. It was emphasized that the lack of effective sanctions against such attacks on judicial activity encourages perpetrators.
CALL TO THE TURKISH GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
In the statement, previously submitted proposals to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the Ministry of Justice were recalled, and it was stated that holistic and deterrent policies must be implemented to prevent violence against lawyers.
“WE WILL FOLLOW THE PROCESS”
The Bar Association stated that it will follow the legal process to the end to ensure that the perpetrator or perpetrators of the attack receive the heaviest punishment. The statement also conveyed condolences for Kocaefe, wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured, and condolences to her family.
