In the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ, heavy rain and hail caused extensive damage to sunflower, watermelon, and canola fields across 35,000 decares in four neighborhoods. Roofs were blown off and tree branches snapped. The Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has initiated damage assessment efforts.

The severe downpour and hailstorm that affected the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ caused near devastation in four neighborhoods. Sunflower, watermelon, and canola fields across approximately 35 thousand decares of land suffered major damage.

WIDESPREAD DAMAGE IN AGRICULTURAL AREAS

The heavy rain and hail, which impacted the rural area of Süleymanpaşa district in Tekirdağ last evening, adversely affected life in the neighborhoods of Ferhadanlı, Hacıköy, Ahmedikli, and Güveçli, affiliated with Süleymanpaşa. While the roofs of some houses were blown off, numerous tree branches broke off. In agricultural areas, significant damage occurred due to the hail.

TRACES OF THE DISASTER EMERGE AT DAYBREAK

Tekirdağ Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mehmet Aksoy, along with provincial and district directorate teams, conducted inspections in the damaged neighborhoods. Aksoy stated that damage assessment efforts have been initiated across approximately 35 thousand decares of land, noting that two days will be awaited for accurate assessment in sunflower fields, while work has begun in watermelon and canola fields together with TARSİM teams.

"4 NEIGHBORHOODS SUFFERED DAMAGE"

Aksoy said, "Since last evening, our district and provincial directorate teams have been on the field. We have started damage assessment work. However, due to the severe hail, it is not possible to make accurate assessments in muddy and wet terrain. Approximately 35 thousand decares of land across four of our neighborhoods were damaged. We will quickly report the damage assessments to our Presidency. We will try to cover the losses of our farmers with support from both TARSİM and our Presidency. Our farmers should apply to TARSİM and our district directorates without delay."

"ALL THAT EFFORT WENT TO WASTE"

Kader Filiz, a farmer in Ferhadanlı neighborhood, described their hardship with these words:

"We planted 4 thousand seeds, all are gone. What can we do, let them think of a solution for us. We've been planting, sowing, and irrigating since March. Hopefully, they will support us. Let half come from us, half from them, but something must be done. We've been grieving since last evening. There's nothing to do, it came from Allah, we'll say thanks, but our sorrow is immense. Not only our melon fields, but our sunflowers are also gone."

Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Candan Yüceer also visited the neighborhoods affected by the hail and met with citizens. Yüceer inspected the damaged agricultural lands and residential areas, receiving information from the teams about the efforts.

Officials stated that the support process for affected producers will be initiated after the damage assessment work is completed.
