Syrian President Ahmed Shara said they are working to reach a security agreement with Israel and are striving to involve the international community in this process. Shara also emphasized that the region should not be forced to choose between Israel and Iran's ambitions.
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara made striking statements about his country's position in recent regional and global developments in an exclusive interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera television.
"WE AIM TO REACH A SECURITY AGREEMENT WITH ISRAEL"
Commenting on Syria's relations with Israel, Al-Shara said they are working to reach a security agreement with Israel. Pointing out that the Tel Aviv administration has various ambitions in the region, Al-Shara said they are striving to involve the international community and many countries in the process to pursue a balanced policy towards Syria. Emphasizing that they avoid engaging in sterile conflicts with Israel, Al-Shara stated that there are some obstacles and Israeli violations before the security agreement between them, but they are making great diplomatic efforts to achieve peaceful solutions with minimal damage. Stressing that the region should not be forced to choose between Israel and Iran's ambitions, Al-Shara noted that regional countries need to establish their own independent political line.

In the interview, Al-Shara stated that the 60-year policies of the Assad regime isolated Syria from its regional and international surroundings, emphasizing that the new era is focused on construction, stability, and development. Al-Shara reported that the US and European countries have welcomed Syria's new chapter very positively, expressing that the full lifting of economic sanctions depends on removing the country from the list of state sponsors of terror. Noting that they are in the process of normalizing relations with Russia and negotiations regarding the future of bases are ongoing, Al-Shara said they are concerned about Hezbollah's presence on the Lebanese border and support the sovereignty of the Lebanese state.
"THE NUMBER OF MISSING PERSONS IN THE COUNTRY IS VERY LARGE AND SHOCKING"
Also touching on domestic political developments and humanitarian issues, Al-Shara stated that they have established a special committee to follow up on the situation of persons missing during the regime of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad, noting that the committee is working well but the numbers they are encountering are very large and shocking. Referring to the implementation of the agreement with the SDG, the Syrian extension of the terrorist organization YPG/PKK, Al-Shara pointed out that there is a slowdown in the process. Al-Shara noted that they nevertheless maintain their determination to make the agreement a success.
Reminding that Syria's eastern region was neglected for years by the old regime, Al-Shara added that a new highway project between the capital Damascus and Deir ez-Zor is being worked on, relations with Iraq are improving, but they are concerned about uncontrolled groups along the border.
