An 11-year-old immigrant child has been arrested in connection with a robbery on the New York subway and a series of muggings in Central Park. New York police have arrested an 11-year-old Venezuelan child as the main "perpetrator" in a violent subway robbery. The child has also been linked to a larger series of robberies committed by immigrant children in Central Park. On Wednesday, police announced that the baby-faced criminal and a 17-year-old child were apprehended hours after attacking a passenger in Queens on Tuesday evening. The 24-year-old victim said, "They attacked me when I tried to retrieve my phone. They pounced on me," and described the 11-year-old child as the "main instigator." Police officials said that the 11-year-old child was caught on security cameras using stolen credit cards from a series of robberies in Central Park. NYPD Patrol Chief John Chell said, "At this point, we can say that this is a pattern of immigrant robberies." Police have linked approximately 10 robberies that occurred in or near the southern end of Central Park to a group consisting of immigrant children or young males. A high-ranking police official said they believe that the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua is behind the immigrant robbery team and they are investigating the possible connection. The gang encourages lower-level members, youths, and young children residing in government-funded shelters to commit robberies. Police have described the situation as a tragedy. An NYPD officer said, "This is the product of a government that does not have a plan to properly integrate immigrants into our community." The victim of the subway robbery is also shaken. "It's sad that he's only 11 years old and doing things like this on the subway," he said, and added, "To be honest, if children are like this, they need stricter parenting. Whatever they're doing is not working."
