It has emerged that the 4 workers who lost their lives in the tornado that occurred in Antalya were watching the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby in a container at the time. The tornado, which caused the tower crane to overturn, was seen to tear the containers apart and hurl them meters away. Within the scope of the investigation into the incident, 4 people were detained, while a local citizen said, "The tornado rose so much that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Everywhere looked like a battlefield."
In a tornado that broke out at a construction site in the Kepez district of Antalya, 2 containers were destroyed and a tower crane toppled. In the incident, which became a fight for survival, it emerged that the 4 workers who lost their lives were watching the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby in the container at that time.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 23:00 on 6199 Street in Fevzi Çakmak Neighborhood of Kepez district. A tornado broke out along with heavy rainfall in Antalya city center yesterday evening. The tornado, which swept away 2 containers where workers were located, also caused the approximately 40-meter-high tower crane to topple. Upon notification, numerous medical, fire, police, and rescue teams were dispatched to the area. With the teams' efforts, the workers in the containers were rescued and taken to hospital. Four workers lost their lives in the incident, and 1 worker was injured.
"WE ARE FACING A VERY INTERESTING NATURAL EVENT"
The destruction caused by the tornado, which Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin described as "We are facing a very interesting natural phenomenon," was captured in daylight. The fragments of the containers at the construction site were seen scattered around, the security wall of a nearby housing complex was damaged, and some vehicles were also affected by the tornado. It was determined that the roof of a nearby school was also affected by the tornado, and some container parts were thrown into the gardens of surrounding housing complexes. At the scene, where the tower crane weighing tons had toppled onto the ground, rescue teams continued their work. It was learned that the tornado occurred while the workers were watching yesterday's Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby in the container.
4 PEOPLE DETAINED
Meanwhile, it was stated that 4 people were detained within the scope of the investigation launched regarding the incident. It was reported that identification efforts for the workers who lost their lives in the incident are ongoing.
"EVERYWHERE WAS LIKE A WAR ZONE"
Turan Işık, one of the neighborhood residents, said, "The tornado rose so high that you could not see a thing. We heard a sound and a roar. My children were in front of the window. When we looked, it was too late; everywhere was like a war zone. It was a huge disaster. The tornado dragged things for meters. The disaster broke out after the rainfall. Containers were thrown to several places. It is a painful event. I wish God's mercy on those who lost their lives."
