An extraordinary engagement ceremony was held in the Suruç district of Şanlıurfa. Abdullah Hafız, a Syrian national, got engaged to Siya Egit İsa, who lives in Aynelarap (Kobani), 2 kilometers away from Suruç. The bride and groom got engaged simultaneously through a ceremony they organized while being in different countries.
AN ENGAGEMENT IN TURKEY, AN ENGAGEMENT IN SYRIA
The groom, Abdullah Hafız, held a traditional engagement ceremony in Suruç with his family and relatives, accompanied by drums and zurna. The bride, Siya Egit İsa, organized a simple ceremony with her family at the same time in Kobani, Syria. A jewelry ceremony was also held during the engagement. A close relative of the groom Hafız was symbolically seated in place of the bride for commemorative photos.
"WE ARE ENGAGING THE GROOM WHERE THE BRIDE IS NOT PRESENT"
Deniz Bilgin, who attended the engagement ceremony as a guest, stated, "The extraordinary engagement we see here is actually a situation we are witnessing for the first time. We are engaging the groom where the bride is not present. There is also an engagement ceremony happening at the same time in Syria, 2 kilometers away, and the bride is getting engaged there without the groom. This situation developed in connection with the peace process. It will depend on the course of events whether the bride will come here or the groom will stay there. We are actually holding this ceremony with faith in the fate of peace. I hope both sides can establish family unity peacefully in their own lands," he said.
"IF WE CAN BRING MY FIANCEE TO TURKEY, IT WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL"
The groom, Abdullah Hafız, said, "Right now we are having an engagement in Suruç, but my fiancée is in Syria. I hope it would be very nice if we can bring her to our Turkish homeland. They are also having an engagement at the same time there. This is both an emotional and meaningful day for us," he expressed.
"A BEAUTIFUL DEVELOPMENT THAT STARTS WITH THE PEACE PROCESS"
İbrahim Halil Yağmurlu, who attended the engagement ceremony as a guest, stated, "Our bride is not here right now, she is 2 kilometers away, on the other side of the border. There is a ceremony there and one here. This is actually a beautiful development that started with the peace process. However, we wish our bride was here as well. Our request from the authorities is to provide some facilitation for such situations. These kinds of unions strengthen the friendship between the two peoples," he said.
