Kenyan Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba won the 48th Istanbul Marathon by Türkiye İş Bankası in the men's category, and Ethiopian Kasanesh Ayenew Baze won in the women's category. Kipchumba, who completed the race in 2 hours 8 minutes 44 seconds, improved the course record of 2:09:44, which had been held since 2019, by 1 minute. In the men's category, Ethiopian Sufaro Woliyi Kebeto was second and Kenyan Vincent Kipyegon Ronoh was third. The champions each received a prize of 50 thousand dollars.
The course record was broken in the men's category at the intercontinental Istanbul Marathon. Among the athletes who started from the July 15 Martyrs' Bridge, Kipchumba in the men's race and Baze in the women's race were the first to reach the finish at Sultanahmet Square.
MEN'S COURSE RECORD IMPROVED BY 1 MINUTE
In the 42-kilometer race that started from the Anatolian Side at 09:00, Kenyan Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba won first place with a time of 2:08:44. Kipchumba made history in the Istanbul Marathon by improving the course record of 2:09:44 from 2019 by exactly 1 minute.
Ethiopian Sufaro Woliyi Kebeto followed the winner 10 seconds behind and took second place with a time of 2:08:54. Kenyan Vincent Kipyegon Ronoh finished the race third.
ETHIOPIA WINS IN WOMEN'S RACE
In the women's category, Ethiopian Kasanesh Ayenew Baze finished first. The 27-year-old Baze, who entered the race as the third-fastest athlete on the start list with a personal best of 2:19:39, crossed the finish line first.
HE HAD ALSO BROKEN A RECORD IN SHANGHAI
Kipchumba, the men's champion, had won the 2023 Shanghai Marathon with a time of 2:05:35, setting both a course record and the best time in marathons run in China. The Kenyan athlete had also won the Hong Kong and Xiamen marathons the same year.
50,000 DOLLARS EACH FOR THE CHAMPIONS
Athletes who finish the marathon's 42-kilometer race in first place are awarded 50,000 dollars each. Kipchumba, who broke the course record, received a total prize of 55,000 dollars, including a 5,000-dollar bonus.
