The Law Proposal Amending the Animal Protection Law, which is aimed at stray animals, has been approved with 4 more articles after approximately 14 hours of discussions in the Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. According to the approved articles of the proposal, rehabilitated dogs from animal shelters will be kept in these places until they are adopted. In order to provide accurate and up-to-date data, animals taken to animal shelters will be registered in the data system of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. CONTROVERSIAL ARTICLE ALSO PASSED THE COMMISSIONRegarding dogs taken to shelters, those that pose a danger to the life and health of humans and animals, whose negative behaviors cannot be controlled, those with contagious or untreatable diseases, or those that are prohibited from being adopted, the provisions of Article 9 of the Veterinary Services, Plant Health, Food and Feed Law will be applied. According to this article, "Euthanasia of animals will be prohibited, however, euthanasia may be decided by a veterinarian in cases where animals suffer pain and distress or have incurable diseases, in order to prevent or eradicate an acute contagious animal disease, or in cases that pose a risk to human health, or in cases where their behaviors pose a danger to the life and health of humans and animals, and their negative behaviors cannot be controlled. Euthanasia procedure will be performed by a veterinarian or under the supervision of a veterinarian." PROTEST IN THE PARLIAMENT CORRIDORSDuring the ongoing discussions of the law proposal that Turkey has been debating for days in the Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the corridors of the Parliament echoed with protests. A large group protested the law proposal, which includes euthanizing dogs, by chanting slogans of "This nation will not forgive you."
