As images of children dying from hunger in Gaza resonate deeply with the global public, a record number of "yes" votes were cast in the U.S. Senate to block arms sales to Israel. In this context, a critical step also came from Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that they would officially recognize Palestine as a state at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
The intense attacks and blockade that Israel has been carrying out on Gaza since October 7, 2023, continue to deepen the humanitarian crisis in the region. Due to the lack of food, water, medicine, and medical supplies, children are particularly suffering the most. While reports indicate that a new child dies of hunger in Gaza every day, the image of a child named Muhammad Zakariya Ayyub al-Matuk, who is almost skin and bones, has resonated around the world.
REACTIONS TO ARMS SALES INCREASING
As heartbreaking images come from the region, many Democratic senators voted "yes" in the Senate to block arms sales to Israel. This development indicates that a critical line against Israel's policies in Gaza is gaining strength within the Washington administration.
CANADA: WE WILL RECOGNIZE PALESTINE
A critical step also came from Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that they would officially recognize Palestine as a state at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. Carney stated at a press conference: "The Palestinian Authority has committed to leading the much-needed reforms for a long time. Israel's actions in Gaza have made the situation untenable. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have lost their lives, and thousands are on the brink of famine."
"THE PATH TO PERMANENT PEACE FOR ISRAEL..."
Carney, who stated that the vision of a two-state solution is no longer sustainable, said, "The path to permanent peace for Israel lies in recognizing a viable Palestinian state."
NEW AID COMMITMENT TO PALESTINE
The Prime Minister of Canada announced that an additional $30 million in humanitarian aid would be provided to Palestine, along with $10 million in support for the stability of the West Bank. Carney also regarded Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's commitment to hold elections in 2026 as a positive development.
15 MORE COUNTRIES AGAINST ISRAEL
The foreign ministers of Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, and Spain made a joint statement titled "New York Call" regarding the Israel-Palestine issue. The countries described the recognition of the State of Palestine as "a fundamental step" in realizing the two-state solution and stated in their joint declaration:
"As a fundamental step to be taken towards a two-state solution, countries that have already recognized the State of Palestine or expressed their willingness or positive assessment to recognize it invite all states that have not yet taken steps in this direction to join this call."
