It has been claimed that the United States and Ukraine have reached a general agreement on a precious metals deal that does not include security guarantees.
AGREEMENT REACHED
Three senior Ukrainian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press (AP), claimed that Kiev and Washington have agreed on the terms of a deal that envisions the sharing of revenues from the country's rare earth elements.
NO MILITARY SUPPORT FROM THE US IN THE AGREEMENT
One Ukrainian official stated that Kiev hopes to ensure the continuation of urgently needed American military support with the signing of the agreement.
Another official claimed that some technical details of the agreement have not yet been clarified, but the current draft does not include Washington's proposal to receive approximately $500 billion in profits from Ukraine's precious metals in exchange for military aid.
AGREEMENT DOES NOT INCLUDE SECURITY GUARANTEES
The official suggested that instead of the mentioned proposal, a joint fund would be established between the two countries, and Ukraine would invest half of the revenue generated from state-owned resources such as minerals, oil, and gas into this fund.
Furthermore, the report claimed that the agreement again does not include the essential security guarantees for Ukraine.
SIGNED ON FEBRUARY 28
Ukrainian officials indicated that the agreement could be signed on Friday, February 28, while stating that the issues of security guarantees and military support could be discussed between the two leaders during this meeting.
"TRUMP: WE ARE READY TO MEET"
US President Donald Trump stated on February 3 that they wanted to obtain rare earth elements from Ukraine.
Trump emphasized that the war in Ukraine needs to end and that if they continue to provide support to Ukraine, there should be a return for that support.
In his statement yesterday, Trump also said he was ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28 to sign the precious metals agreement.
Ukraine has a wide variety of critical and major element and mineral fields, including lithium, titanium, uranium, and manganese.
EU ALSO WANTS TO MAKE A MINING DEAL WITH UKRAINE
Meanwhile, according to reports in the European press, European Commission Vice President Stephane Sejourne announced that the EU has proposed a mining agreement to Ukraine that would benefit both parties. Sejourne, responsible for the EU's industrial strategy, stated that during his visit to Kiev yesterday, where the war has entered its third year, the EU side presented a "competitive" offer to Ukrainian officials.
"CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A WIN-WIN PARTNERSHIP"
Sejourne stated, "21 of the 30 critical materials that Europe needs can be provided by Ukraine through a win-win partnership," arguing that Europe would never propose an agreement that would not benefit both sides.
