An elderly man in Eskişehir, who lost 470,000 TL to scammers posing as police officers, was prevented by jewelry store employees while trying to cash in 1 million TL worth of gold to send it. Police launched an investigation into the incident.
In Eskişehir, a jeweler's employees prevented an elderly man, who had previously lost 470,000 TL to phone scammers posing as police officers, from cashing in his 1 million TL worth of gold and sending it to the scammers.
The incident occurred at a jeweler on Ertaş Street in the Emek neighborhood of Odunpazarı district. According to the information obtained, an elderly man came to the jeweler to cash in a large amount of gold. The elderly man, who wanted to convert over 1 million TL worth of gold into cash, exhibited anxious and suspicious behavior that caught the attention of the jeweler's employees.
THE TRUTH EMERGED WHEN THE JEWELER INQUIRED
Suspicious of the situation, the jeweler's employee asked the elderly man why he was in such a hurry to cash in the gold. When the elderly man said that people posing as police officers were demanding money over the phone and that he urgently needed cash, the employees immediately reported the situation to the police. Upon the report, police teams were quickly dispatched to the scene.
HE HAD PREVIOUSLY SENT 470,000 TL
During the initial investigation at the scene, it was determined that the elderly man had previously transferred 470,000 TL via bank transfer to the same scammers shortly before this incident. If the jewelers had not noticed the situation and questioned it, the elderly man would have cashed in his 1 million TL worth of gold and delivered it to the scammers, bringing his total loss to 1.5 million TL.
Police teams have launched a wide-ranging investigation to apprehend the scammers.
