The Berlin Regional Court in Germany sentenced a palliative care doctor to life imprisonment for administering sedatives and muscle relaxants to at least 15 elderly patients without their consent, causing their respiratory muscles to fail and leading to their deaths.

A verdict has been reached regarding Doctor Johannes M., who was identified as having killed 15 patients in Germany and was arrested on suspicion of serial murder due to being a suspect in the deaths of 75 patients. In the final hearing of the trial, which lasted about a year, the Berlin Regional Court sentenced the palliative care doctor to life imprisonment for causing the deaths of at least 15 elderly patients by administering sedatives and muscle relaxants without their consent, leading to the failure of their respiratory muscles and subsequent deaths. The court also banned the doctor from practicing medicine for life.

“THE DOCTOR CAUSED THE DEATHS OF HIS PATIENTS WITH THE DRUGS HE ADMINISTERED”

In its ruling, the court stated that it was determined Johannes M. gave a lethal mixture of various drugs to 12 female and 3 male patients between 2021 and 2024. The ruling noted that the youngest victim was 25 years old and the oldest was 94, emphasizing that while the deceased patients had fatal illnesses, their deaths were not imminent. The court ruled that the doctor caused the deaths of his patients through the drugs he administered.

The Berlin Regional Court announced that the doctor was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing 15 patients, while also reporting that the investigation into 75 fatal incidents is ongoing. It was stated that the case regarding the 75 incidents in which the doctor is a suspect will be filed by the end of the year.

In the indictment from the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany, it was stated that in the incident that came to light on August 6, 2024, Johannes M. also set fires in the homes of 5 victims to destroy evidence.

DOCTOR CONFESSED TO KILLING 12 SERIOUSLY ILL PATIENTS

The doctor confessed during the hearing on June 25 that he killed 12 seriously ill patients during home visits. In his statement, he argued that he did the right thing and committed the murders to free the patients from “pain and illness.”
