The flood disaster that shook Istanbul was clearly coming! A stream is flowing under the buildings.

Following the downpour reported to have broken an 84-year record in Istanbul, the images that emerged in Dereboyu Creek left people astonished. It was seen that buildings had been built on the streambed, which had been covered with concrete years earlier and granted zoning permission, while the water continued to flow beneath these structures. The floods caused by the overflowing of streambeds narrowed by rubble gave citizens a nightmare.

The downpour that was effective in Istanbul and reported to have reached the highest rainfall amount in 84 years paralyzed life in the city, while the images that emerged after the flood disaster drew attention. In the area where Dereboyu Stream is located, water was seen flowing under the buildings built over the stream bed. The images transmitted from the region by A Haber Domestic News Director Kerim Ulak revealed how stream beds that were covered with concrete years ago turned into a danger during heavy rainfall.

STREAM FLOWS UNDER THE BUILDINGS

In the footage recorded at Dereboyu Stream, water was seen flowing directly under the buildings. Kerim Ulak, reporting on the situation in the area, stated that in past years the streams that flowed had their tops covered with concrete and that zoning permits were granted for construction in these areas.

The continued flow of water under structures built over stream beds raised questions about the safety of the development in the area.

STREAM BEDS WERE COVERED WITH RUBBLE

Another striking detail in the area was that the stream beds had been covered with rubble and various materials. It was stated that because of these interventions blocking the natural flow of water, the carrying capacity of the stream beds decreased and water overflowed into the surroundings during heavy rainfall.

In particular, pouring concrete over stream beds and allowing construction around them brought discussions about the causes of the floods back to the agenda.

IT TURNED INTO A DISASTER ALONG WITH RECORD RAINFALL

The heavy rainfall, reported to have broken an 84-year record in Istanbul, combined with problems in the stream beds and caused flooding in many areas. While roads turned into lakes, homes and workplaces were flooded, and many citizens experienced difficult moments.

The images from Dereboyu Stream, however, revealed that in the flood disaster, not only the amount of rainfall but also the interventions on the stream beds and the zoning permits granted in the past should be questioned.

HOW WERE ZONING PERMITS GRANTED FOR THESE BUILDINGS?

Water flowing under the buildings built over the stream bed brought with it questions about under what conditions the structures were built and how the zoning permits were granted.

In particular, covering stream beds with concrete, narrowing them with rubble, and building structures on them increased concerns that similar dangers could occur in possible new downpours.
