Due to the tightened dress code restrictions in state schools in Azerbaijan, students wearing headscarves were turned away from school gates again in the new week. While parents of students who were not admitted to classes gathered in front of schools to protest the situation, civil society organizations called for the protection of the constitutional right to education.
The renewed strict enforcement of dress-code restrictions in public schools in Azerbaijan in recent weeks has brought about a serious public debate across the country.
THE SCENE DID NOT CHANGE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK EITHER
The scene did not change on the first day of the week either; many students wearing headscarves were stopped at the entrance of the building by school administrations and officials and were not allowed inside. After students were not allowed to enter classes and were sent home, many parents gathered in front of schools and objected to the administration's decision.
PARENTS AND CIVIL SOCIETY TOOK ACTION
While tension occurred between parents, who argued that their children's constitutional right to education was taken away, and school administrations, reactions also rose from the judicial and civil society side. Many lawyers, civil society organization representatives, and citizens called on the Baku administration to immediately end the arbitrary obstructions. It was stated that especially the children of veterans who lost limbs in the Karabakh War and of martyrs' families being subjected to this treatment deeply wounded the public conscience.
THEY EXPECT ALIYEV TO TAKE A STEP
Groups reacting to the restrictions at school doors are demanding that authorities take steps to preserve the balance between the right to education and freedom of belief and that students' removal from educational processes be ended.
