The event took place in a park in Luoyang, China. A small child was playing on the frozen lake with friends when the ice suddenly broke, and the child fell into the icy water. Struggling in the sub-zero cold, the child was unable to get out of the water on his own.
Noticing the situation, Mr. Ban, who was in the park with his daughter, rushed to help without a moment's thought. He gave his jacket to his daughter and then lay face down on the ice, starting to crawl. This way, he tried to distribute his weight to prevent the ice from breaking.
When he reached the middle of the lake, he pulled the child out of the water and pushed him onto sturdier ice. However, at that moment, the ice broke again, and Mr. Ban fell into the water. The man, trying to hold onto the edge of the ice with his arms, faced difficulties due to the broken ice.
Meanwhile, another citizen helped Mr. Ban by crawling on his stomach over the ice and assisted him in getting to the shore. The people around who witnessed the moments experienced great fear and astonishment.
According to reports, the small child had advanced to the middle of the lake despite his family's warnings not to "go onto the ice."
After the rescue, Mr. Ban stated that he knew how to move on ice thanks to videos he watched online in his free time. "I knew I had to move horizontally to distribute my weight," he said.
While recounting the moments he experienced, Mr. Ban could not hide his emotions, saying, "When I fell into the water, the cold penetrated to my bones. My legs went numb immediately, and I was very scared."
After being rescued, Mr. Ban took a long hot shower to recover his body and said that when he returned to work in the following days, his friends declared him a 'hero.' However, he did not accept this definition:
"I just did what needed to be done. Everyone there would have done the same thing. My difference was being there at that moment."
After the footage spread rapidly on social media, Mr. Ban, who gained great attention, stated that his only wish after the events was to return to his normal life.
