DEATH PENALTY CARRIED OUT

Xu Yao, who was sentenced to death after poisoning and killing Lin Qi, the founder of Chinese gaming company Yoozoo, has had his sentence executed. A statement from the company said, "Justice has finally been served. We are deeply saddened by Lin's passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family. As colleagues who fought alongside him, all members of the company are grateful for the impartiality of the judicial process."

POISONED AND KILLED THE BILLIONAIRE BUSINESSMAN

The death of Lin, founder of Shanghai-based Yoozoo Games, best known for the strategy game "Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming," shocked the Chinese and global gaming industry. Lin had appointed Xu Yao to head a subsidiary called Three-Body Universe, established in 2018 to manage projects related to a science fiction series. However, when Lin decided in 2020 to appoint other managers to oversee business operations, the relationship soured, and Xu turned the toxic substances into pills and mixed them into Lin's food, poisoning him. Lin went to the hospital after feeling unwell and died on December 25, 2020, at the age of 39. Xu was taken into custody days after Lin was hospitalized. Xu was sentenced to death in 2024.

Lin was estimated to have a net worth of approximately $1.3 billion at the time.

Lin's company Yoozoo Games holds the film adaptation rights to the Chinese sci-fi trilogy that Netflix turned into the series "3 Body Problem." The sci-fi trilogy "3 Body Problem" is based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's work "Remembrance of Earth's Past." Originally published in Chinese, the books have been translated into about 30 languages and inspired numerous adaptations. The adaptation released on Netflix in 2024 quickly became one of the platform's most-watched productions.
