The claims put forward by Ümit Özdağ, the General Chairman of the Victory Party, have caused tension between Özdağ and the MHP. In a post on his social media account, Özdağ alleged that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli was visited by the US Ambassador in 2006, and that the ambassador told Bahçeli, "We will work with you for many more years."
"WHAT ELSE DO YOU EXPECT?"
Citing an article by Foreign Policy about Bahçeli, Özdağ stated in his post, "Foreign Policy, one of the two most important magazines of American foreign policy along with Foreign Affairs, says 'Devlet Bahçeli is breaking the taboos of Turkish nationalism.' In fact, it says it completely shatters them. In November 2006, before the MHP Congress where I was a candidate for MHP Chairman, the American ambassador visited Bahçeli and said, 'We will work with you for many more years.' Bahçeli did not break the taboos of Turkish nationalism; he destroyed Turkish nationalism within the MHP. I invite all Turkish nationalists and Atatürkists to the Victory Party. What else do you expect?"
IMPLIED RESPONSE FROM MHP
The MHP was quick to respond to Özdağ's statements. MHP Secretary-General İsmet Büyükataman clarified the allegations in a written statement while using implied expressions regarding Özdağ.
Büyükataman stated that after the US Ambassador visited all parties with groups in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, he visited the MHP, and that this meeting was recorded and the minutes were sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said, "In this meeting, our Chairman, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, stated that the political integrity in Iraq should be ensured, that sectarian and ethnic divisions should be prevented, that the PKK terrorist organization should be eradicated, that the establishment of a terrorist state is unacceptable, and that our fight against terrorism will continue. He expressed his sensitivity regarding the unitary structure, national state, and territorial integrity. He stated that no concessions would be made against issues that threaten Turkey's national existence."
"HE IS ACCUSTOMED TO SECRET MEETINGS"
Büyükataman continued his statement by saying, "Ümit Özdağ, whose only political sustenance is slander and provocation, is accustomed to backdoor secret meetings and making the Turkish nation a bargaining chip in secret protocols. Therefore, it is normal for him not to comprehend that the Nationalist Movement Party always and everywhere acts in accordance with the interests of the Republic of Turkey, or if he does comprehend, to try to distort it. Because this person has no source to feed on other than chaos. The Turkish nationalist, patriotic voter has no mission other than to channel votes to the presidential candidate of the terrorist barons in Kandil through convoluted paths."
