The moments when MPs threw chairs at each other, poured water, and attacked with fists were captured on camera.
THOSE WORDS LIT THE FUSE OF THE DEBATE
According to a report by The Sun from the British press, the incident occurred on Thursday, October 29, in Armenia's National Assembly. During the speech of Taron Chakhoyan, an MP from the ruling Civil Contract Party, his remarks directed at opposition Strong Armenia Party leader Narek Karapetyan heightened tensions.
Chakhoyan, while criticizing the political activities of Karapetyan's family, recalled that his cousin had previously proposed establishing a "Ministry of Sexual Satisfaction" aimed at meeting women's sexual needs. Chakhoyan's words, saying that women had still not received an apology because of this statement, lit the fuse of tension in parliament.
CHAIRS FLEW THROUGH THE AIR
As the verbal confrontation escalated, MPs advanced on each other. In the incident, which quickly turned into a fistfight, chairs were thrown and kicks were aimed. Deputy Speaker Vahagn Aleksanyan drew attention by throwing a red leather chair toward the opposition benches.
The moments when ruling MP Chakhoyan poured water over the head of opposition MP Garnik Davtyan were also captured on camera. It was reported that some MPs took off their jackets and joined the fight, and the scuffle spilled into the parliament corridors.
MPs WERE INJURED
It was reported that during the scuffle, opposition MP Andranik Gevorgyan's nose bled and Ruben Mkhitaryan's clothes were torn. As the incident escalated, an ambulance was called to the parliament and the session was suspended.
PASHINYAN'S STRIKING STATEMENT
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that he condemned the violence in parliament, but supported his own party's MPs. Pashinyan said he found the intervention of ruling MPs proportionate and justified.
Opposition leader Narek Karapetyan described what happened as "a normal man-to-man fight, Armenian style."
