Houthis in Yemen announced that they attacked three Saudi oil tankers in the last 48 hours. Houthi sources also claimed they turned back 16 Saudi ships attempting to pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Yemen's Houthis have reportedly attacked 3 Saudi oil tankers in the last 48 hours. According to a report by Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen TV citing Houthi sources, the attacks were carried out as part of the group's implementation of a naval blockade it declared against Saudi maritime shipping.
16 SHIPS ALLEGEDLY TURNED BACK
Houthi sources claimed that no Saudi tanker has been able to pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea since the blockade was launched last Monday. The same sources alleged that 16 ships belonging to Saudi Arabia were denied passage and turned back.
While these claims have not been confirmed by independent sources, no official statement has yet been made by Saudi Arabia or the Saudi-led coalition.
TENSIONS ARE ESCALATING
The Houthis announced on Thursday that they had targeted two Saudi oil tankers they claimed were violating the naval blockade in the Red Sea. The Saudi News Agency confirmed that a tanker belonging to a Saudi company was hit and caught fire.
Following this, the Saudi-led coalition struck military facilities in the Houthi-controlled city of Hodeidah on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Houthis launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi energy facilities.
The Saudi-led coalition has been conducting military operations against the Houthis since 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
