The Ministry of Trade removed a housing advertisement published on a listing site with the statement "not available for rent to retirees" and imposed an administrative fine on the relevant real estate business.
The Press Advisor of the Ministry of Trade, Bekir Kaplan, announced that a housing advertisement published on a listing site with the statement "not for rent to retirees" has been removed and that an administrative fine has been imposed on the real estate business that published it.
A rental apartment advertisement in Ümraniye, Istanbul, received significant backlash on social media due to its expressions targeting retirees. The advertisement prepared for a 2+1 apartment explicitly stated that retirees would not be accepted as tenants, citing the reason as "retirement salaries cannot be seized."
MINISTRY IMPOSED THE FINE
Following the backlash against the advertisement, the Ministry of Trade took action. The ministry removed the housing advertisement and imposed an administrative fine on the relevant real estate business.
In a statement regarding the issue shared on his social media account, Trade Minister Kaplan said, "The housing advertisement published on a listing site with the statement 'not for rent to retirees' has been removed as a result of the examination conducted by our Ministry, as a violation of the Regulation on Real Estate Trade was identified, and an administrative fine has been imposed on the relevant real estate business. As the Ministry of Trade, we see ensuring that every citizen receives services under equal conditions, maintaining fair, honest, and ethical commercial activities in the market, and preventing any discriminatory practices that harm the conscience of society as our fundamental priorities. We will continue to stand by honest trade, fairness, and social responsibility; we are determined to protect our citizens' rights and legal interests."
