The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has published its latest situation report on the Ebola outbreak declared in May. It was announced that as of August 31, the number of confirmed cases nationwide had risen to 6,186, while the total death toll in the outbreak had reached 3,007.

DEATH RATE EXCEEDS 48 PERCENT

According to government data, the death rate in the outbreak has been recorded at 48.6 percent. It was reported that 1,409 people have recovered so far, while 830 patients are being kept under observation in quarantine and treatment centers. It was stated that the outbreak continues in a total of 60 health zones across the DRC, in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, South Kivu, and Bas-Uele.

THE SECOND LARGEST OUTBREAK IN WORLD HISTORY

The current outbreak, which erupted due to the 'Bundibugyo' type of the virus, has been recorded as the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak in the DRC's history. The current situation also constitutes the second largest Ebola outbreak recorded worldwide, after the one that occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of people.
