A 50 percent customs tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian products has come into effect in the US. The Ottawa government has suspended trade talks with Washington, while Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the tariffs will be met with a 'dollar-for-dollar' response. The decision has moved the trade tensions between the two neighboring countries to a new stage.

Following the US decision to impose 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian products, Canada has announced it will retaliate against these tariffs.

The 50% tariffs imposed by the US government on certain products imported from Canada, valued at $20 billion, have come into effect.

These tariffs will affect approximately 5% of the goods Canada exports to the US each year.

The Canadian products worth about $20 billion include a diverse range of items, from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, speaking to the press on the matter, stated that Canada has refused to finalize the trade agreement "within the terms agreed upon."

Greer noted that the US offer was "forward-looking" and said it involved "a historic economic and national security partnership."

"CANADA WILL RESPOND IN KIND TO THESE TARIFFS"

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in his statement, noted that the US is imposing tariffs on its closest allies and indicated that they are aware that "there can be no return to old relations" with that country.

Carney stated that following the tariff decision, he decided to suspend trade negotiations with the US, saying, "The last-minute changes to the terms proposed by the US are unfair and economically disadvantageous. To protect workers and businesses, Canada will respond in kind to these tariffs."
