The New York State Senate in the United States has decided to recognize February 1st as 'World Hijab Day.' The bill emphasizes the importance of wearing the hijab and aims to amplify the voices of women who wear it and to combat discrimination.
The New York State Senate in the United States has passed a resolution recognizing February 1st as "World Hijab Day."
The bill, presented by New York Senator Roxanne Persaud, has passed the state senate.
"DESIGNED TO PROMOTE HONOR AND RESPECT FOR WOMEN"
The resolution notes the inherent right of the people of the United States and New York State to honor, be respected, and practice their religion freely, stating: "The hijab is a traditional headscarf that covers a woman's hair and chest and has been very significant in Islamic history. It is designed to promote honor and respect for women, as well as to preserve modesty and respect for religious beliefs."
"REFLECTS CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY"
Afaf Nasher, Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations New York Office (CAIR-NY), stated regarding the resolution, "This decision reflects New York's celebration of cultural and religious diversity. World Hijab Day is an important opportunity to amplify the voices of hijab-wearing women and to combat the prejudice and discrimination they often face."
WORLD HIJAB DAY
Bangladeshi-American Nazma Khan, who faced challenges in her education and daily life due to wearing a hijab, initiated World Hijab Day in 2013 to raise awareness. Celebrated every February 1st through Khan's initiative, World Hijab Day aims to strengthen tolerance and understanding between hijab-wearing Muslim women and non-Muslims. There are over 70 volunteer organizers in 45 countries around the world for World Hijab Day.
