It was alleged that Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti was subjected to torture in Israel's Ramon Prison. In a meeting with his lawyer, Barghouti reported that he had been physically assaulted in recent weeks, and it was claimed that he was not treated despite being injured. Barghouti, who has been in prison since 2002 and has received five life sentences, prompted calls for urgent intervention from international human rights organizations.
It has been claimed that Marwan Barghouti, one of the symbolic names of the Palestinian resistance, has been subjected to "brutal torture" in an Israeli prison. Concerns about Barghouti's health condition are increasing, and a call has been made to the international community.
"SUBJECTED TO ATTACKS REPEATEDLY, NOT TREATED"
The public campaign committee established for the release of Barghouti and other Palestinian prisoners issued a written statement on the occasion of the 24th year of his detention. The statement indicated that Barghouti has been subjected to physical attacks in Ramon Prison in recent weeks.
It was reported that Barghouti, who met with his lawyer on April 12, was attacked by Israeli forces, particularly on March 24-25 and April 8. The statement said, "Barghouti's body received numerous wounds, and despite losing blood, he was deprived of medical intervention."
EMPHASIS ON "SYSTEMATIC TORTURE"
The statement alleged that Barghouti has been subjected to systematic torture since October 2023, when Israel launched its attacks on Gaza. A call was made to international human rights organizations to take urgent action for both Barghouti and other Palestinian prisoners.
WHO IS BARGHOUTI?
Marwan Barghouti, born in 1958 in the village of Kobar near Ramallah, joined the Fatah Movement at the age of 15. Detained many times throughout his political life, Barghouti was among the prominent figures of the First Intifada.
Elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996, Barghouti rose within Fatah to the position of General Secretary.
SENTENCED TO LIFE 5 TIMES
Barghouti, detained by Israeli forces at his home in Ramallah in 2002, was sentenced to life imprisonment five times and an additional 40 years on charges of "murder and attempted murder."
Barghouti's transfer to Ramon Prison in 2024 under the instruction of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and his being held in isolation has increased concerns on the Palestinian side.
