The world's most popular messaging app, WhatsApp, will end support for devices running Android 6.0 or lower as of September 8, 2026. This decision will most affect older phone models using Android 5.0 and 5.1. The company stated that this step was taken for security and performance reasons. To avoid data loss, users need to back up their data and either update their devices or switch to a newer model.
WhatsApp, one of the world's most widely used messaging applications, has decided to end support for older generation software in order to keep its technological infrastructure up to date.
As part of the regulation that will come into effect on September 8, 2026, devices with versions below Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) will no longer be able to access WhatsApp. This change will most affect users of older smartphones still running Android 5.0 and 5.1 versions.
SECURITY AND PERFORMANCE REASONS
In a statement made by the company, it was stated that this decision is based on security and performance requirements. It was expressed that old software infrastructures are insufficient for WhatsApp to comply with next-generation security protocols and to maintain application performance.
The main reason for ending support is cited as the inability of modern features and advanced encryption systems to work stably on older operating systems.
UPDATE CALL TO USERS
Authorities emphasize that users should update their devices or switch to a newer model to avoid service interruptions. Particularly those using Android 5.0 and 5.1 versions need to take the necessary steps by the specified date.
WARNING AGAINST DATA LOSS RISK
WhatsApp recommends that users make backups to prevent data loss before the support interruption. It was noted that cloud backups can be made via Google Drive to protect messages and media files, or local backups can be manually transferred to new devices.
IOS USERS WILL NOT BE AFFECTED
On the other hand, there is no change for iOS users. WhatsApp service will continue on Apple devices with iOS 15.1 and above versions.
HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR DEVICE IS COMPATIBLE?
Users can learn whether their device will continue to receive WhatsApp support by checking the Android version. To do this, it is sufficient to enter the "About Phone" or "Software Information" section in the Settings menu. If the device has Android 6.0 or a higher version, the application can continue to be used. Device owners using Android 5.0 or 5.1 will need to update or switch to a supported device by September 8, 2026.
