The first hearing of the case regarding the stabbing death of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan in Istanbul's Güngören district will be held at the Bakırköy 2nd Heavy Penal Court for Children. The 14-year-old defendant E.Ç. is being tried for 'intentional killing of a child' and faces up to 21 years and 7 months in prison.
The first hearing of the case regarding the death of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan, who was stabbed to death in Istanbul's Güngören district, will be held today.
The trial for the death of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan, who lost his life in a brawl in Güngören, will begin today. The hearing, which will be conducted by the Bakırköy 2nd Heavy Penal Court for Juveniles, is expected to be attended by the deceased Çağlayan's plaintiff family, and 14-year-old E.Ç. is expected to make his defense before the judge for the first time. Meanwhile, the hearing will take place in the conference hall inside the courthouse. Additionally, security measures have been increased around the courthouse before the hearing. The trial will be closed to the press and spectators.
FROM THE INDICTMENT
In the indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, E.Ç. (14) is listed as the 'suspect', Atlas Çağlayan as the 'deceased', four children including Çağlayan's twin brother Doruk as 'victims', and three people including Çağlayan's parents as 'plaintiffs'.
The prepared indictment stated that on the day of the incident, January 14, at around 20:16, a dispute broke out between two groups in a cafe, during which the Child Pushed to Crime (SSÇ) E.Ç. stabbed Atlas Çağlayan, and as a result of this incident, Çağlayan died at the hospital where he was taken, and an investigation was launched regarding the incident.
AUTOPSY REPORT DETERMINED THAT THE INJURY WAS FATAL ON ITS OWN
The prepared indictment included the report of the Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK). The report emphasized that E.Ç. committed the crimes of 'intentional killing', 'violation of law no. 6136 on firearms, knives, and other tools', and 'threat with a weapon', and that his ability to perceive the legal meaning and consequences of these acts and to direct his behavior was sufficiently developed.
Additionally, the autopsy report of the deceased Atlas Çağlayan dated January 15, 2026, was included in the indictment. According to the report, Çağlayan had a 3.5 cm cut in the middle of the chest and a 1.5 cm cut on the left side of the chest, and the autopsy report stated that two sharp object wounds were detected on the body, there were large sharp object wounds in certain areas of the chest, and this injury was fatal on its own.
Video examination records from the day of the incident were also included in the indictment. According to the records, on the day of the incident, E.Ç. and his friends were sitting in the cafe, then Atlas arrived, E.Ç. exchanged glances with Atlas while leaving the cafe, Atlas and his friends followed the SSÇ and his friends, E.Ç. took a knife out of his pocket, swung the knife at Çağlayan 2-3 times, injuring him, and after stabbing the deceased, the SSÇ fled with his friends. Meanwhile, it was stated that in the 3-month location data of the suspect E.Ç. and the deceased Atlas Çağlayan, no common base station records were found between the parties. It was also noted in the indictment that according to the examination of E.Ç.'s phone, multiple photos of the suspect holding a weapon, photos of weapons alone, and one photo of a pocketknife were found.
DEMAND FOR A PRISON SENTENCE OF UP TO 21 YEARS AND 7 MONTHS
In the prepared indictment, it was requested that the suspect E.Ç. be punished with a total prison sentence ranging from 13 years and 6 months to 21 years, 7 months, and 15 days for the crimes of 'intentional killing of a child', 'violation of law no. 6136', and 'threat with a weapon in a chain manner'.
