The Ministry of Justice's decision to review unsolved murder files from the 1990s has brought the assassination of Uğur Mumcu back into the spotlight. While his brother Ceyhan Mumcu stated that Mumcu was openly threatened by the Israeli Ambassador before his death, retired Lieutenant General Erdoğan Karakuş pointed to Mossad's involvement in the murder and suspicious flight activity at Esenboğa.
With the Ministry of Justice re-examining the unsolved murder files of the 1990s, the assassination of journalist Uğur Mumcu has also topped the agenda. Mumcu's brother Ceyhan Mumcu and retired Lieutenant General Erdoğan Karakuş made striking statements regarding the Israeli and Mossad connections behind the assassination.
"ISRAELI AMBASSADOR OPENLY THREATENED UĞUR"
Speaking to Türkiye Newspaper, Uğur Mumcu's brother, jurist Ceyhan Mumcu, stated that his brother had obtained critical information about PKK-Israel relations before his death and was therefore targeted. Noting that Israel saw Uğur Mumcu as a direct threat, Ceyhan Mumcu said: "Uğur told me about his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador. The Israeli Ambassador openly said, 'You are pushing us too hard; this situation cannot continue. You might even face an assassination.' After the meeting, he told me he had a nightmare, dreaming that his feet were cut off. The assassination happened not long after."
"GROUND WAS PREPARED FOR FEBRUARY 28, AND RELATIONS WITH IRAN WERE SEVERED"
Highlighting the social and political consequences of the murder, Ceyhan Mumcu emphasized that the assassination aimed to create a secular-Muslim divide in society and disrupt Turkey's relations with its neighbors:
- Social fragmentation: As a result of the assassinations, Turkey's social dynamics were shaken, and the process extended to February 28.
- Foreign policy blow: After the attacks, Turkey's relations with Syria and especially Iran came to the brink of collapse.
- MIT confession: He stated that a high-ranking MIT official at the time told him about the Israeli connection of the assassinations, but no official action could be taken then.
Expressing satisfaction that the file has been taken off the shelf, Mumcu said that retired Lieutenant General Erdoğan Karakuş, former security, military, and intelligence officials, and former TTB President Şebnem Korur Fincancı should be called to testify.
RETIRED GENERAL KARAKUŞ: MOSSAD ACTIVITY AT ESENBOĞA SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED
Retired Lieutenant General Erdoğan Karakuş, who first brought up the Mossad involvement in the serial murders of the 1990s, also made important statements. Stating that the focus should be on the instigators rather than the triggermen, Karakuş drew attention to details at Esenboğa Airport: "According to the information I have obtained, there is Mossad involvement in the martyrdom of Uğur Mumcu and other intellectuals. The activities of Mossad agents who came to Turkey before the attack and information about the team that boarded the Tel Aviv plane after the incident will play a key role. We need to focus not on the triggerman, but on those who pulled the trigger."
FILES BEING RE-EXAMINED
With the Ministry of Justice reopening the unsolved files that laid the groundwork for the 1990s, one of the darkest periods in the history of the Republic, and the February 28 process, the course of the investigation is being closely followed by the public.
